Rhythm, musicality, joy

Tap

Tap at Reverence develops rhythm, musicality, and coordination through the energetic art of percussive dance. From first steps in ballet/tap combo classes to the advanced Tap 4 Company level, every stage is taught with clear technique and contagious joy.

What tap builds

  • Rhythmic precision

Tap builds an ear for timing that translates to every other style and to musical performance generally.

  • Percussive independence

Learning to drive rhythm with your feet builds coordination that carries into everyday movement.

  • Performance confidence

Tap is inherently social — dancers learn to respond to music, partner, and audience in real time.

  • Adult-friendly re-entry

Of all our styles, tap is the most common for adults returning to dance — rewarding from day one.

  • A complete technical vocabulary

From shuffles and flaps to wings and pull-backs, tap has a vocabulary as deep as ballet's.

  • Low barrier, high ceiling

A beginner can make sound in the first class. A lifetime of tap is still not enough to master it.

What to expect

Tap classes open with warm-up drills that build each foot's independent rhythm: shuffles, flaps, heel-toe work. Across-the-floor combinations bring the rhythms into motion. The middle of class introduces the week's combination — usually a short phrase set to music that dancers work on over several classes. Classes close with freestyle time where students can play with the rhythms they've learned.

Dress code

Form-fitting top and pants or shorts that let the teacher see your feet. Tap shoes (style and tie requirements vary by level). Hair secured back. Full dress code details are shared at enrollment.

Why tap matters

There's no dance style more immediately satisfying than tap. You make music with your feet. Beginners can walk out of their first class with a rhythm they didn't have an hour earlier.

At Reverence, we teach tap with full technical seriousness — proper ankle mechanics, precise timing, a deep vocabulary — while keeping the joy front and center. Our tap classes are loud, quick, and warm.
